Configure VPN for Microsoft Windows 10

Follow these instructions to set up the VPN connection and then use the connection to connect to the university network.

Configuration summary

Add the connection

If you have an existing connection to our VPN service, remove the old one before adding a new one.

In the taskbar, select either the wired or wireless network button.

Select the Network & internet settings link.

The Network & internet settings panel lists the available network connections.

Select the VPN tab in the left-hand navigation.

Select Add a VPN connection.

The Add a VPN connection dialog will appear.

Enter the following connection settings:

VPN providerWindows (built-in)
Connection nameUALR VPN
Server name or addressvpn.ualr.edu
VPN typeL2TP/IPsec with pre-shared key
Pre-shared key

(retrieve the UALR pre-shared key and enter it in the shared secret field)

Type of sign-in infoUser name and password
User name(leave blank)
Password(leave blank)

Uncheck the box labeled Remember my sign-in info.


7Select Save to apply the settings.The Settings window will now display the UALR VPN connection.

You may close the Settings window when you are finished setting up the connection.


Use the connection

These instructions assume you have a working connection to the internet.

Connect

To start a VPN connection:

In the taskbar, select either the wired or wireless network button.

You might also have a shortcut on the desktop
2Select the UA Little Rock VPN connection profile.
3Select the Connect button.A sign-in prompt will appear.
4At the sign-in prompt, enter your NetID (which is now your email address) and password.
5Select OK.
6Approve the sign in on the Microsoft Authenticator appMulti Factor Authentication is enabled on the VPN.  You must approve the sign in on your phone using the Authenticator app.  Your connection to the university network should now be active.

While you have an active VPN connection to the university network, you may access campus-only services such as remote desktops and network-restricted applications.

Disconnect

To end a VPN connection:

In the taskbar, select either the wired or wireless network button.

Select the UALR VPN connection profile.

Select the Disconnect button.

Access to the campus network will be disconnected.
Remove the connection

Follow these instructions if you are re-configuring your connection or no longer need a VPN connection.

In the taskbar, select either the wired or wireless network button.

Select the Network & internet settings link.

The Network & internet settings panel lists the available network connections.

Select the VPN tab in the left-hand navigation.

The current VPN connection profiles will appear.

Select the UALR VPN connection profile.

Select the Remove button.

A prompt will appear to confirm removal.

At the prompt, select the Remove button again.
